STIFF DRINKS : THE BOULEVARDIER

W
HISKEY IS AN ACQUIRED TASTE. EACH VARIETY HAS ITS OWN NUANCES AND FLAVORS THAT COMPLIMENT DRINKS EVER SO SLIGHTLY OR ELEVATE BORING COCKTAILS. THE BOULEVARDIER IS A WHISKEY COCKTAIL THAT IS SAID TO BE A SIMPLE TWIST ON ITS WARM-WEATHERED COUSIN, THE NEGRONI. IT’S BITTERSWEET BALANCE BETWEEN CAMPARI AND SWEET VERMOUTH REMAINS, BUT ADDING BOURBON WHISKEY (OR RYE) CHANGES THE FLAVOR PROFILE. WHEREAS THE NEGRONI IS A CRISP AND LEAN COCKTAIL, THE BOULEVARDIER HAS AN EARTHY QUALITY AND IS PARTICULARLY GOOD AFTER A MEAL OR A DRINK THAT’S SATISFYING MIDWAY THROUGH THE NIGHT. FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT GIN DRINKERS, THE BOULEVARDIER OFFERS A GREAT OPTION FOR A PARTY GUEST OR A FRIEND WHO’S LOOKING FOR A NEW COCKTAIL. BY MERELY SWITCHING THE SPIRIT, THIS COCKTAIL CAN HAVE A SPOT IN YOUR ROTATION BECAUSE IT DOESN’T NEED ANYTHING ADDED TO AN ALREADY STOCKED BAR CART. THE TRUTH IS, THE BEST COCKTAILS ARE ALWAYS THE SIMPLEST.
